Siding Repair: When to Patch and When to Re-Side

Repair makes sense when
Damage is localized (single section from storm impact). Siding is under 15 years old and matching replacement is still available. Behind-siding sheathing and house wrap are intact.
Vinyl siding panels can almost always be swapped individually — even on older siding — with the right tools. Fiber cement repairs are harder due to fastening patterns and finish matching.
Replace when
Multiple sections show damage from age (fading, warping, cracking). Re-siding is needed regardless of patches.
Behind-siding rot or moisture damage is found. Patching siding over compromised sheathing guarantees the problem will return.
Color or product is discontinued. Mismatched patches reduce curb appeal and resale value.
Insurance is funding the work — most policies pay full replacement value of the damaged side rather than spot repair.
