Siding Installation Process: Day by Day, What to Expect
A complete timeline for a full re-side, the inspection points along the way, and how to spot shortcut installers.
A complete siding replacement on a typical home takes 5–10 working days. Knowing what should happen on each day is the best protection against the corner-cutting that plagues this trade.
Days 1–2: Tear-off and inspection
Old siding comes off, exposing the sheathing. This is the critical inspection moment — water damage, rot, and missing flashing all become visible. Any change-order pricing should be discussed and signed before new material goes up.
Quality crews will also re-flash windows and doors, install a proper weather-resistive barrier (Tyvek or equivalent), and tape all seams. Shortcuts here lead to leaks within 5 years.
Days 3–8: Installation
New siding starts at the bottom and works up, with J-channel and corner trim installed first. Watch for proper nailing — nails should sit in the slot centers (vinyl) or hit nailing flanges (fiber cement). Overdriven nails cause buckling and warranty voids.
Days 9–10: Trim, paint, and walkthrough
Final trim around windows, soffit work, and caulking happens last. Walk every elevation with the foreman before signing off — point out anything that bothers you while the crew is still on site.
