How to Vet a Siding Contractor
Manufacturer-certified installer programs and the references that matter.
Siding installation is one of the trades where install quality matters as much as material quality. A James Hardie certified installer with 15 years of experience will outperform a low-bid generalist on the same material every time.
Manufacturer-certified installer programs
James Hardie Elite Preferred Contractor: completes Hardie training and meets volume requirements. Carries extended warranty eligibility.
LP SmartSide Pro: similar program. Required for some warranty extensions.
Always verify directly with the manufacturer's website, not the contractor's claim. Some contractors claim certifications that have lapsed.
References that matter
Ask for 3 references from completed jobs 3+ years old. The performance of siding shows up in years 3-5, not year 1.
Drive by completed projects when possible. Look for proper flashing details, even reveals, and no buckling along long runs. Caulk joints should still be intact.
