Roofing Warranties Compared: Material vs. Workmanship
What manufacturer warranties actually cover, and which exclusions to watch for.
Roofing warranties come in two flavors — material from the manufacturer and workmanship from the installer. They cover different problems, have different durations, and have very different real-world value.
Manufacturer warranties
Standard manufacturer warranty: 25-50 years material defect, but pro-rated after year 10. Real-world coverage decreases sharply — a year-20 claim might cover 30% of replacement cost.
Enhanced 'system' warranties (GAF Golden Pledge, CertainTeed Integrity Roof System): require certified installer, full system components from one brand, and registered installation. In return: non-prorated lifetime material AND 25-year workmanship coverage.
Workmanship warranties from the contractor
Industry standard is 5-10 years. Some shops offer lifetime. The catch: it's only worth what the company is worth. A lifetime warranty from a contractor that goes out of business in year 3 is worth zero.
Always combine: top-tier manufacturer system warranty (covers material AND workmanship if the contractor disappears) plus a contractor with at least 10 years operating history.
