How to Spot (and Avoid) Storm-Chaser Roofers
The high-pressure tactics that follow hailstorms — and the credential checks that protect you.
After every major hailstorm or hurricane, out-of-state contractors descend on affected neighborhoods with door-knocking sales reps. Some are legitimate; many are predatory operations that disappear before warranties matter. Knowing the playbook protects you from the worst outcomes in roofing.
The storm-chaser playbook
Door-knock within 48 hours of a storm, offer 'free inspection,' climb on the roof and create damage if necessary, then promise to handle the insurance claim. Once paid by insurance, the work is rushed, supervised by sub-subcontractors, and often skips permits.
Out-of-state license plates, no local office, demands for upfront deposits, and 'today only' pricing are universal warning signs.
How to protect yourself
Use only local-only contractors with a physical office, an established phone number, and a 5+ year operating history in your area. Verify state contractor license. Confirm GAF Master Elite or CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster status if you want top-tier warranties.
Never sign an Assignment of Benefits handing your insurance claim to a contractor. Work directly with your insurer's adjuster and a separate, vetted contractor.
