Garbage Disposal Buying and Install Guide
Horsepower ratings, sound insulation, and what install really costs.
A quality 3/4 HP or 1 HP garbage disposal runs $150-$300 in material and $150-$300 in install labor. Stepping up from a builder-grade 1/3 HP unit to a properly-sized disposal eliminates 90% of the jamming and clogs people accept as 'normal.'
Horsepower matters more than features
1/3 HP: builder-grade, jams on anything tougher than soft food scraps. Avoid.
1/2 HP: minimum for typical household use.
3/4 HP: handles most fibrous and starchy foods (celery, potato peels) without jamming. Sweet spot for most kitchens.
1 HP: handles small bones and aggressive use. Worth it for households that cook frequently.
Sound and longevity
Premium models (InSinkErator Evolution, Waste King L-3300) include sound insulation that reduces operating noise by 50-70%. Genuinely noticeable upgrade in open kitchens.
Stainless steel grinding components last 10-15 years vs. galvanized at 5-8 years. The longer warranty (typically 8-10 years on premium units) reflects the difference.
