Mosquito yard treatments run $80-$200 per visit, typically every 3-4 weeks during mosquito season. They genuinely reduce mosquito activity by 60-90% in the treated area — but the methods and tradeoffs vary significantly.
Barrier sprays explained
Most services apply a pyrethroid-based residual spray to vegetation around the perimeter of the yard. Kills resting mosquitoes on contact and provides 3-4 weeks of residual control.
Concerns: pyrethroids also kill beneficial insects (bees, butterflies, beetles). Most reputable services skip flowering plants and apply during low-pollinator hours.
Larvicide and source reduction
More targeted approach: identify standing water (gutters, bird baths, low spots, plant saucers) and treat with Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) — kills mosquito larvae but harmless to other insects and pets.
For homes with persistent issues, an in-ground misting system ($2,500-$6,000 installed) provides automated targeted treatment around outdoor living areas.
