How to Choose a Pest Control Company
Licensing, certifications, contract terms, and the red flags.
The pest control industry is regulated state-by-state, with technician licensing required almost everywhere. National brands and small local operators both exist in the market — and which suits you depends more on the specific service than the company size.
Credentials to verify
State pest control business license, verified online. Individual technician licenses for whoever services your home. Current general liability insurance ($1M+).
Industry credentials: QualityPro accreditation (from NPMA) and GreenPro certification both indicate higher standards than the basic licensing minimum.
Contract terms that matter
Auto-renewal clauses: most service contracts renew automatically unless cancelled in writing 30-60 days before renewal. Note the date and put it on your calendar.
Termite contracts: confirm whether you have retreatment-only or damage repair coverage, the annual renewal fee, and the inspection schedule. Damage repair coverage that lapses can't usually be reinstated.
