Paver Patio Cost Guide by Size and Material
Concrete vs. clay vs. natural stone, what proper base prep adds, and the upcharges that catch buyers off-guard.
A mid-grade concrete paver patio averages $25–$45 per sq ft installed nationally, putting a typical 400 sq ft patio at $7,000–$14,000. Material choice, base prep, and pattern complexity all move the number significantly.
What's in the price
Roughly 40% is materials (pavers + 4–6 inches of compacted base + polymeric sand). Another 40% is labor — excavation, base prep, paver laying, and compaction. The remaining 20% is equipment rental, edging, and disposal.
Proper base prep is non-negotiable. Patios installed over inadequate base settle within 3–5 years and become a much bigger fix than they would have been with the right install. Insist on 4-inch minimum compacted gravel base (6 inches in freeze-thaw climates) and a thin layer of bedding sand.
Material comparison
Standard concrete pavers: $20–$35/sq ft installed. Most durable, biggest selection of colors and patterns. Premium concrete pavers: $30–$50/sq ft. Clay brick: $30–$50. Natural stone (bluestone, travertine): $40–$80/sq ft. Permeable pavers: add 20–30% but help with stormwater runoff requirements in many municipalities.
