A low-voltage landscape lighting system with 15-20 fixtures averages $2,800-$5,500 installed. It's one of the highest-ROI exterior upgrades — adds curb appeal, security, and usable evening living space at a fraction of any hardscape investment.
Low-voltage is the right choice
Modern LED low-voltage systems (12V) use a single transformer ($200-$500) feeding multiple fixtures via direct-burial cable. Safe to install around children and pets, easy to add fixtures, and consume tiny amounts of energy.
Line-voltage (120V) systems are obsolete for residential landscape lighting except for tall pole-mounted security fixtures.
Fixture count and placement
Path lights: every 8-12 ft along walkways. Uplights on trees: 1-3 per tree depending on canopy. Wall washers: every 6-10 ft of facade. Step lights: every step on stairs deeper than 4 risers.
Quality brass fixtures (Volt, FX Luminaire, Kichler) last 20+ years. Cheap stamped-aluminum fixtures from big-box stores rust through in 2-4 years — false economy.
