Indoor Air Quality Upgrades: A Realistic Cost Guide
From basic media filters to whole-home HEPA and UV — what each upgrade costs and which actually deliver.
Indoor air quality has become a major upsell in the HVAC industry — and a lot of the products contractors recommend offer marginal benefit at significant cost. Here's what each upgrade actually does and what it should cost installed.
What's actually worth the money
Upgraded media filter (5" cabinet, MERV 13): $200-$450 installed. Captures most allergens and is the single best IAQ investment for almost any home. Replace filter annually at $40-$80.
Whole-home dehumidifier (humid climates): $1,800-$3,500 installed. Keeps interior humidity in the 40-50% range, dramatically reduces dust mites, mold spores, and that 'sticky' feel. Major comfort upgrade in southern markets.
What's often oversold
UV lights ($400-$900): kill mold growing on the AC coil itself but do little for circulating air. Worth it only on systems with documented coil mold issues.
Ionizers and PCO devices ($600-$1,500): efficacy is contested in peer-reviewed research and some models produce ozone as a byproduct. Skip these unless your specific health condition requires them and your physician recommends a specific product.
