Subfloor Issues That Derail a Flooring Install
Moisture, deflection, and out-of-flat conditions that turn a one-day install into a one-week project.
Most flooring failures aren't caused by the flooring — they're caused by the subfloor underneath. A careful installer checks moisture, flatness, and structural integrity before laying a single board. Skipping that step is how floors squeak, buckle, and fail warranties within 2 years.
Moisture is the silent killer
Concrete slabs must test below 4 lbs/1,000 sq ft per 24 hours (calcium chloride test) or 75% relative humidity (in-situ probe) before hardwood or LVP install. Wood subfloors must be within 4 percentage points of the flooring material's moisture content.
Skipping the moisture test is the single most common reason hardwood floors cup within a year of install. Reputable installers either test themselves or require it.
Flatness and deflection
Most hardwood and LVP manufacturers require subfloor flatness of 3/16" or less over 10 feet. Out-of-flat areas require self-leveling underlayment ($1-3/sq ft) before flooring goes down. Catching this before the floor is delivered prevents days of delays.
Bouncy or deflecting floors point to undersized joists or rotted areas. A floor that flexes won't hold a tile installation and will eventually crack grout lines.
