Sump Pump Buying Guide: Primary, Backup, and Battery Systems
What to look for, redundancy options, and install costs by configuration.
A reliable sump system is the single most important defense against a flooded basement. Primary pump plus battery backup is now the standard install — running $1,200–$2,600 nationally — and skipping the backup is the most common false economy in basement waterproofing.
Primary pumps: pedestal vs. submersible
Submersible pumps sit inside the pit, run quieter, and last 10–15 years. They cost $250–$500 for a quality 1/3 HP cast-iron unit (avoid plastic-bodied homeowner-store specials). Pedestal pumps stick out of the pit, are louder, but easier to service and last 20+ years. Pedestal is fine for occasional sump duty; submersible is better for systems that cycle frequently.
Sizing matters more than brand. A 1/3 HP pump moves about 35 gallons per minute at typical head height — adequate for most homes. Step up to 1/2 HP for deep pits, long discharge runs, or properties with high water tables.
Battery backups and water-powered backups
Battery backups ($350–$900 installed) run a secondary DC pump when the power fails — exactly when storms cause the worst flooding. Expect 5–7 hours of continuous pumping on a fresh deep-cycle battery. Replace the battery every 3–5 years.
Water-powered backups use municipal water pressure to drive an ejector. No battery to replace, runs indefinitely, but only practical on city water and they waste 1–2 gallons of water per gallon pumped. Best as a tertiary backup behind a battery system in serious-flood-risk homes.
